Chesterville Witches Grave

A few miles West of Arcola, Illinois on State Route 133 is the sleepy little town of Chesterville.
Chesterville is located in the heart of Amish country. The Amish faith plays a very large roll in the
legend of the Chesterville witch. As most legends go, nothing is known about the “witches” identity.
All that is known about the “witch” is what the Amish elders of the time want us to know.
This is what we know;
The “witch” was Amish and got disgruntled with the Amish way of life. She became very outspoken
against the Amish church and was banished from the church by the Amish elders.
As word spread of her banishment, it was inevitable that she was labeled as a “witch” and said to practice witchcraft. Not long after she left the area, she was found dead in a farmers field. Her cause of death was ruled “death by natural causes” The true cause of death will never be known because the elders, those who ruled in the cause of death, were Amish. She could have been murdered and dumped in the field.
The “witch was buried in the back of Chesterville Cemetery and an Oak tree was planted on top of her grave to “seal” her in her grave. It is believed that if the tree dies or is cut down, the “witch” will be released from her final resting place.
Later an iron fence was placed around the grave to keep curious visitors away from the tree. The fence has not worked as planned. As you can see in the photos, the mighty Oak has grown through the fence.
There have been numerous sightings of the “witch” around her grave.
